Mahadevans, with no offense meant, i think the days of shorthand are now past.
There may be a niche manager or two wanting shorthand, but have not the technology moved ahead to make this wonderful tool of secretaryship redundant in the modern business world. I work in a very large prosperous organization in toronto canada, and do not know of even one person knowing pitman. I think pitman is obsolete even in its land of birth. I think brahmin youth should be encouraged to think higher than being a personal assistant or secretary.
Get to aim high and help them out if you can. Please do not treat this as a critique but more as an observation. U r right in your judgement. I find from the + results of this year and last year that a reasonably good number of brahmin boys have scored marks not enough to seek admission in professional colleges to become ITs or Software or Hardware or even doctors. Such boys have no inclination to improve their memory power (this is essential to score high marks). Demand for shorthand writers is there in Tamil Legislative assembly.
Stenographers are in demand everywhere. Shorthand is a sure way to master english; it helps to cover up the communication weakness of students.
Even I am teaching sudoku to improve interpretational skills of students. My posting on sudoku is also there. So I am ready with two alternatives. I am interested in improving the communication skills of those boys who need attention. How many are able and ready to do chess and become Viswanath Anand?
I am a fan of Viswanath Anand. It is my wish that our boys should emulate Viswanath. Such things can be achieved through sudoku and shorthand also. Some Tamil shorthand writers in Tamilnadu assembly requested me to build a team of tamil shorthand writers.
Hence I made an attempt. I do not know to what extent I will be successful. But dear friend, my target is hardly 100 students in 2 years. So my dear friend, I read all your chess postings.
I know you are for skills development of our boys. Any boy / girl you can refer to me.
I am here to trim their brain nerves for a sharp memory and improved skills. Shri Mahadevans: The subject kindled my 'malarum ninaivugal'. I am also a person who qualified in 150 in English Shorthand and 100 in Tamil Shorthand. Glad to note you have got qualified in Hindi also. I am in private service and have got only 3 more years of service. It is a fact that though the present scenario is not in favour of shorthand writers for service entry, the usage of shorthand cannot be eliminated and the knowledge of Shorthand will help to a great extent in modern communication.
Professions like Legal, Accounting definitely need accurate reproducers. A person with shorthand definitely stands at a better place. Your target of getting 100 persons in two years is a very good target.
I hope you will succeed in this endeavour very easily. I wish you get an another successful innings - by taking vadhyar role for these Secretarial subjects. I also would like to observe your modus operandi. You can count on getting good mouth publicity from me for the service offered by you. All the best. அவரவர் இச்சையில் எவை எவை உற்றவை அவை தருவித்தருள் பெருமாளே.
Dear sundararajan, I passed 150 wpm in 1981 and 120 tamil in 1985. I am also aged 56. I think we must have passed 150 wpm same year or so. When I passed there were 1 first class and 16 second class. Srinivasalu, Reporter gave dictation. Srinivasalu and myself became typing champion in 1983(Godrej). He became champion from chennai (91 wpm) and I became champion from Trichy (90 wpm).
We both participated in finals in chennai 1984 when Dr. Rajender singh became All India champion, 101 wpm) I want to interact with you in G mail. So send a mail to my id:. How do you type in tamil. I am searching fonts but could not get it. Guide me on typing tamil.

This is my teaching methodology. In 35 years, students got trained by me, are using all my short cuts. Hope to see u soon. Wonderful Swaminatha Sharma. Which Department you are Steno? I was Stenographer to Under Secretary (Law) Government of Pondicherry in 1977.
That office is in the backside of Roman Rolland Library. I was student of Motilal Nehru Polytechnic1971-1974.
Then became clerk in All India Radio, Pondicherry 1974-1977. In Venkata Nagar, Samuel Fredrick (Retired Steno Jipmer) was my master. By the time I passed 150 wpm my age was barred. But I continue for 180 wpm and 150 Tamil purely for interest in shorthand. I WANT A HELP FROM YOU. Please go to Venkata Nagar (Opp.Ganesh Temple (Narimedu) his house is there.
Just meet him and tell my name. He will recognise me. Get his address and mail me.

It will be better if we meet in Bangalore. I am retired from all services(educational institutions) and free now. I have the book 'you too can write 240 wpm' by Edgar Thope and OP Kuthiala. This book is out of print now. Aiyar's books Lightning cuts and Reporters phrase book. If you can come here for two days, you can xerox these books and carry with you.
I am now vigorously practising for 150 tamil for appearance in Feb.2011. 2010 for English 180. This is because Tamil 150 will improve my flow of english 180 wpm. Such is the difficulty in Tamil. Even in this I have brought so many improvements (Tamil). Transcription daily the copy written passage is a MUST.
At least copy write 5 minutes passage and transcribe in computer. This is what I do. Speed is easy to attain. Transcription is the only prob. One Damodaran, my shorthand classmate was in PWD in 1977. I don't know where he is. Just find out where he is and his designation.
I need lot of things from you from Pondicherry. And you need lot of things from Bangalore.
I am running a typewriting institute. Shorthand is not taught much among students. But for entry level in Government Organisation, shorthand is a must, says a G.O. Issued by Government of Tamil Nadu. Now after so many years, I am studying Teachers Training Certificate Course in Typewriting and Shorthand.
Government has made it mandatory that along with Typewriting and Shorthand, the entry level candidates should have a certificate course in Office Automation. A person should have all the three certificates for entry level (clerical/typist/steno-typist) in Government Organisation. Shorthand is not dead. It has its own way of living.
If a person learn shorthand, his skill is increased. Being a shorthand and typewriting teacher, i felt like sharing my views. Now a days North Indians send their children to English coaching centers. IT/BPO/Call Center has changed the whole scenario in the service sector.
By neglecting English, North has lost the opportunities in these sectors. If Chinese mastered English, our IT sector would not have thrived like this. Knowing typing always helps in the computer key board but shorthand has become almost irrelevant.
Almost everybody types their own emails and only people at very high levels have a personal assistant knowing shorthand. All the best. Good to know about the special place pitman has with t.n.
Here is a personal story. When my wife came to canada 1980, soon after our marriage, she started hunting for jobs. The first interview was with a money manager, a 65 (then) old american, who was a millionaire himself and who managed money for rich people. Mr dodge was of the old school. There were 3 applicants for the post of personal secretary - two very attractive white girls, and this 'just landed off the boat' indian girl - my wife. The whites knew only dicta. My wife had a higher pass in short hand.
She got the job and a beeg boost in her self confidence. Personally, at high school time, i also did typing at mylai commercial institute.
I enjoyed the classes and prior to lower i came out top of the class with 120 wpm. My uncle got upset when i told him this, and persuaded my parents for me to stop going to typing & shorthand. His explanation: that with these skills i will soon get a job, scent of money and would not go to college.
Dear madam sumathi Glad that you are in chennai. On 10th July 2010 I settled my life in chennai with my son joining tcs as business analyst. At the same time, I have come to California with family to see my first son working with cisco systems. I will be back in chennai on 17th Oct.2010.

We will discuss further in mail and person in oct.2010. Venkatesan R Velachery Happy to note your services for the development of Tamil Shorthand and your meeting with Mr.G.S.Ananthanarayanan. I am also a Tamil Stenographer and rose tothe rank of Joint Secretary(Editor) in the Legislative Assembly Secretariat I had the privilege of working with the mother institution of Tamil Shorthand.the Police Shorthand Bureau, and later joined the Tamil Nadu Legislature during 1970 and be a Tamil Reporter to work with Mr.GSAnanthanarayanan. Mr.G.S.Ananthanaryanan has done a remarkable contribution for the development of Tamil Shorthand by bringing in a simplified edition of tamil shorthand book and also the Tamil Shorthand Dictionary. I wish that a Forum of Tamil Stenographers should be formed to press for award of:kalaimamamani' title to Mr. GS Ananthanarayanan for his contribution. My desire is that a separate Research Department should be establlished in the Tamil University for development of tamil shorthand to induct into the system, phraseography, coining new strokes for difficult words in tune with the development of tamil language.
I was the Secretary, the President, and Chairman of the Competitive tests conducted by the of the Stenographers Guild. During my association with the Guild in the years 1971-76, I taught tamill shorthand to the learners in the Stenographers Guild by providing them with the manuscript pages written by me.
It was the knowledge of Englsih and Tamil Shorthand helped to puruse higher studies and thus acquire a M.A,Degree in Polical science,LL.B. And also Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism and Public Relations, Post graduae diploma in PesonnelManagement and Industrail Relations. Wishing prosperity to all who devote their time develop tamil shorthand, I conclude.
